Internal linking

Links between pages on the same website that distribute authority and guide navigation.

Definition

Internal linking is the practice of adding hyperlinks that connect one page on your website to another page on the same website. Every website uses internal links — your navigation menu, footer links, and in-content links are all internal links. But strategic internal linking goes beyond basic navigation to deliberately distribute page authority and guide both users and search engines through your content.

Search engines use internal links to discover pages, understand site structure, and distribute ranking power (often called "link equity" or "PageRank"). A page with many internal links pointing to it receives more authority than an orphan page with none. The anchor text of internal links also provides contextual signals about what the linked page is about.

Effective internal linking in 2026 follows a few key principles: link from high-authority pages to important pages you want to rank, use descriptive anchor text that includes relevant keywords, create logical content hierarchies (pillar pages linking to cluster content and vice versa), and ensure every page is reachable within 3 clicks from the homepage. Automated tools can identify linking opportunities you might miss manually.

Why it matters

Internal linking is one of the few SEO levers entirely within your control. Unlike backlinks, which depend on external sites, you can optimize your internal link structure at any time. Proper internal linking improves crawlability (helping search engines find and index all your pages), distributes authority to the pages that matter most, and keeps users engaged by guiding them to related content.

Sites that neglect internal linking often have orphan pages that never get indexed and high-value pages that underperform because they receive no internal authority. A systematic linking strategy can yield significant ranking improvements with no new content required.
