Keyword density

The percentage of times a keyword appears relative to total word count on a page.

Definition

Keyword density is the percentage of times a target keyword or phrase appears on a page compared to the total number of words. If your article is 1,000 words and your keyword appears 15 times, the keyword density is 1.5%.

In the early days of search engines, keyword density was a primary ranking factor. Webmasters would stuff pages with repeated keywords to manipulate rankings. Google and other search engines have long since evolved beyond this. Modern algorithms like BERT and MUM understand context, synonyms, and natural language patterns far better than simple word counting.

In 2026, there is no ideal keyword density number. Instead, the best practice is to write naturally, ensure your target keyword appears in key positions (title tag, H1, first paragraph, and a few times throughout the body), and focus on covering the topic thoroughly. Tools that analyze keyword density can still be useful as a sanity check — if your density is 0%, you probably forgot to mention the keyword, and if it is above 3-4%, you may be over-optimizing.

Why it matters

Understanding keyword density helps you avoid two extremes: under-optimization (where search engines cannot determine your page's topic) and over-optimization (where keyword stuffing triggers spam filters). A balanced approach ensures search engines understand your content without penalizing it.

Modern SEO scoring tools measure not just raw keyword density but also the use of semantically related terms, proper heading structure, and natural language flow. This gives a much more accurate picture of how well a page is optimized.
